The complete and authentic restoration of the Pointe-Claire Windmill is a complex, multi-year undertaking that requires a methodical and professional approach. Our plan is structured in distinct phases to ensure that work is prioritized, funds are used effectively, and the project meets the highest standards of heritage preservation.
This plan is guided by our foundational research and will be executed under the supervision of a qualified heritage architect and certified craftsmen.
Phase 1: Stabilization and Investigation
(Estimated Cost: $400,000)
This is the most urgent phase, focused on stopping further deterioration and gathering the essential data for the full restoration.
- Archaeological Survey: Conduct a complete archaeological evaluation of the site’s interior and a three-meter perimeter.
- Structural Stabilization: Undertake urgent repairs to the masonry to secure the structure.
- Detailed Architectural Plans: Commission the chosen heritage architect to produce the final, detailed blueprints and Class A budget for the complete restoration.
Phase 2: Exterior Restoration
(Estimated Cost: $900,000)
This phase will return the windmill to its authentic, 18th-century appearance.
- Masonry: Complete the full restoration of the fieldstone walls using historically appropriate materials and techniques.
- Roof & Cap: Reconstruct the wooden roof structure and rotating cap based on historical models.
- Sails: Fabricate a new set of four historically accurate windmill sails.
Phase 3: Interior Restoration & Interpretation Center
(Estimated Cost: $700,000)
This final phase will bring the windmill back to life.
- Mechanism Installation: Complete the installation of internal components, making the mill fully functional.
- Interpretation Center: Design and install the interior museum exhibits, displays, and educational materials for the new public Interpretation Center.
- Site Landscaping: Complete the final landscaping and site work to prepare the grounds for public access and tours.
